How Does Bone Grafting Work? When Is It Needed?
When you lose a tooth, the portion of jawbone that supported that tooth will begin to weaken because it lacks stimulation once provided by the tooth roots.
Dental implants can replace tooth roots and support crowns, bridges, or dentures, but they require a certain amount of healthy bone tissue for placement.
This means many people who are missing teeth aren’t candidates for dental implants without preparatory treatment.
Bone grafting is that preparatory treatment. A dentist applies donor bone material (allograft), synthetic bone material (alloplast), or tissue from your own body (autograft) to the weakened area of the jaw. The graft will then fuse with the jawbone. It also encourages new bone growth through the body’s natural processes.
After a healing period of a few months, the treated jawbone will be strong and stable enough to permanently hold dental implants in place.
Bone Grafts vs. Sinus Lifts What’s the Difference?
A bone graft is performed to restore density to the lower jaw after bone loss. A sinus lift is performed to restore density to the upper jaw and involves careful repositioning of the delicate sinus floor (below the nasal cavity) to create space for dental implants. Our dentists gladly offer both sinus lifts and bone grafts in our Fairfax dental office.
State-of-the-Art Technology and Sedation Why Fairfax Chooses Our Team for Their Needs
Bone grafting may be an important step on your path to a fully restored smile. Our dentists in Fairfax make the experience as comfortable and efficient as possible. See how we stand out when it comes to bone graft surgery:
Digital X-Rays
Our Fairfax, VA, dental office proudly features the advanced VATECH i3d digital X-ray system for diagnostics and treatment planning. We can capture detailed images of your teeth, jaw, and oral structures with this tool. It helps our dentists determine the precise amount of graft material you'll require and the depth at which to place it for optimized results.
Dental Sedation
Bone grafts can be performed under local anesthesia, but you have additional options for comfort at Fairfax Family Dental Care. We offer sedation dentistry so you can undergo your procedure in a deeper state of comfort and relaxation. Sedation can take some time to wear off, so you’ll need a friend or loved one to drive you home from our office.
Can I Get My Implants Right After My Bone Graft?
Bone grafting is surgery, so you’ll likely need a few months to heal before implant placement. It takes time for the graft material to integrate with the existing jaw tissue and promote the growth of new bone to the point it can support an implant.
Every patient is different, however, and the speed at which you’ll be able to receive your implants may depend on the size, type, and position of the graft, among other factors. Our dentists in Fairfax will closely monitor your healing throughout recovery and let you know as soon as it’s possible to place your dental implants. If you have any questions, you can always send our team a message.
