If you are dealing with any of the following dental problems, contact us immediately to book an emergency appointment. These are all indications that you need a new crown or crown replacement:
- A broken, chipped, or fractured tooth
- A cracked, loose, or dislodged crown
- Severe tooth pain
- A tooth abscess
What Is a Dental Crown?
/
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that restores the function and appearance of a damaged tooth. A crown is also placed following root canal therapy to help provide additional strength and protection to the tooth structure. Crowns are often used to address cracked, chipped, or worn teeth, and they can be paired with dental implants to replace a missing tooth.
The Extraordinary Benefits of Dental Crowns
Durable
Dental crowns are designed to withstand tremendous force. They restore your ability to eat and chew without worrying about breaking or damaging your tooth. Whether you have a root canal or chipped tooth, crowns can help.
Natural-Looking
Thanks to the advanced materials used in dentistry today, such as porcelain or zirconia, crowns look and feel incredibly natural. They are crafted to blend in with your natural teeth, so no one will ever know you had dental work.
Long-Lasting
Crowns are a reliable and long-term prosthetic that provide a wealth of benefits. Porcelain crowns have an average lifespan of 15 years, but they can last over two decades with proper care and maintenance.

See Why Our Patients Love Fairfax Family Dental Care
All around GREAT Dental Services. Staff are friendly and easy to work with. My hygienist is so compassionate and thorough. I have never had an unpleasant experience. Dr. Kamali is fantastic. Very knowledgeable and down to earth. All my dental work has been without issue. If you are looking for a new dental practice or looking to switch from your current provider, I would highly recommend Fairfax Family Dental Care. Five Stars All Around!
View on GoogleI recently returned to the practice after many years away and I they still seem to provide the best care I have ever seen in a dental office. Dr. Kemali answered all my questions and assured to me that a cavity that I was told may have needed a root canal which would have costed me thousands of dollars and half a tooth wasn’t present in my x-ray. I am grateful for a honest, knowledgeable provider that isn’t looking to upsell any unnecessary procedure. Highly recommended A+++

When a dental crown is considered medically necessary by a dentist, dental insurance policies typically offer partial or full coverage for the cost of the crown. During your appointment, our team will check with your insurance provider and provide you with a quote that details the costs covered by insurance and any out-of-pocket costs that you are responsible for paying.
Am I a Candidate for a Dental Crown?
In general, those considering dental crowns must have sufficient healthy tooth structure remaining. During a consultation at our Fairfax, VA, office, our dentists can help determine if this treatment option is right for you. You may qualify for a dental crown if you have:
- A tooth that is chipped, broken, or fractured
- Significant dental decay
- A weak tooth that needs reinforcement
- Dental erosion due to bruxism (teeth grinding)
- Finished root canal treatment
- A dental implant that needs to be restored
- A traditional dental bridge placed
While crowns are a common restorative treatment option, they are also used for cosmetic purposes. Dental crowns can be used to conceal misshapen teeth or to address deep stains and discoloration that doesn't respond to teeth whitening.

After Dental Crowns: Common FAQs
Will I experience pain or side effects after dental crown treatment?
Immediately following your dental crown placement, you may notice slight tenderness and sensitivity. These side effects are to be expected and should diminish within a few days. To reduce discomfort, you can take pain medication, chew in a different area of the mouth, and consume soft foods. Most patients can return to work and other normal activities right away.
How long do dental crowns last?
Although your custom crown may be referred to as a permanent crown, it will eventually need to be replaced when it begins to look worn or becomes dislodged or loose. At Fairfax Family Dental Care, we commonly see dental crowns that last 10 to 15 years or more with proper oral care.
How do I care for my crown?
Caring for your crown is just like caring for your natural teeth. Brush twice a day, floss daily, and attend dental exams and cleanings every six months to maintain good oral health. Avoid using a hard-bristled toothbrush or abrasive toothpaste. It is also important to refrain from bad dental habits, such as using the teeth as tools (for example, opening bottles with your teeth).

Tooth Crown Replacement
Even the most durable dental materials and dental crown adhesives wear down over time. If you are unhappy with the fit or appearance of your crown, we can work with the skilled technicians at our partner lab to craft a restoration that looks natural, fits precisely, and protects your tooth.
Some of the reasons you may wish to replace a dental crown are because it:
- Falls off
- Feels loose
- Is discolored
- Looks worn
- No longer matches the appearance of surrounding teeth
- No longer sits flush against the gums
In addition, during your routine dental exams and cleanings at Fairfax Family Dental Care, we will check the integrity of your crown, looking for signs like cracks or other damage that can make your tooth more vulnerable to dental problems. We will also check the health of the underlying tooth to ensure that it is free of tooth decay and root canal infection. If your tooth is damaged, we will need to remove your crown to treat the issue and replace the crown.
Dental Crown Alternatives
Dental Fillings and Bonding
Dental fillings and bonding are the most conservative treatment options for a damaged tooth. We use a composite, tooth-colored material to fill in cavities, chips, cracks, and other signs of damage. These treatments are highly effective when dental problems are in their early stages and more easily treated.
The durable composite material can be applied directly to the tooth. It is then shaped to improve the appearance of the tooth and bring the bite into alignment. Next, the soft composite material is hardened with a curing light. This treatment can be done in one visit to our Fairfax office.
Inlays and Onlays
Inlays are a more conservative option that involves the fabrication of a porcelain, resin, or gold restoration that fits within the cusps of the molars. Onlays cover more surface area than inlays and are also called partial crowns; they cover the indented surface of the molars, cap the cusps of the molars, and may extend down to cover a small portion of the crown of the tooth.
Like dental crowns, this treatment requires two dental appointments; one to prep the tooth and take impressions, and a second to place the custom inlay or onlay after being fabricated by our trusted lab.
Tooth Extraction
If your tooth is too damaged to be saved with a crown, we may recommend a tooth extraction. This is always the last resort to restore your oral health. If you need a tooth or multiple teeth extracted, we recommend replacement as soon as possible to prevent more serious oral health problems.
We offer many tooth replacement options, including implant-supported crowns, bridges, and dentures, and traditional bridges and dentures. We can recommend a treatment plan that meets your health needs and budget during your appointment at Fairfax Family Dental Care.
