Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are a unique, removable prosthesis that can restore your ability to eat, chew, and speak normally after you have lost several teeth. At our office in Fairfax, VA, our team offers both traditional partial dentures and implant-supported bridges.

Fairfax Family Dental Care has been in practice since 1986. Our patients value Drs. Charles Kirksey, Milan Simanek, and Touraj Kamali's conservative approaches to dental care. They never recommend treatment that patients do not need.

Benefits of Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are usually recommended to restore oral function following the loss of multiple teeth. Patients who have partial dentures placed at our Fairfax dental clinic can enjoy benefits such as:

  • More attractive smile: Dr. Kirksey will be careful to color-match the prosthetic to your natural teeth so your partial denture blends with your smile. Most people will not be able to tell that you have artificial teeth. Furthermore, replacing missing teeth can leave you looking significantly younger.
  • Reduced risk of teeth shifting: When we lose a tooth, its neighbors can often shift, throwing your entire bite out of alignment. By wearing a partial denture, you can reduce your risk of teeth shifting and protect yourself from potential oral health problems.
  • Better bite balance: Missing teeth can leave you overly relying on the healthy sides of your mouth when chewing. This can lead to premature wear on those teeth.
  • Improved speech: We rely on our teeth for much of our speech. Losing teeth or replacing them can consequently have a huge impact on the clarity of your speech.

Implant-supported partial dentures offer additional benefits, including superior stability and reduced gum irritation. As an additional bonus, implants can also stop or even reverse the effects of jawbone deterioration in the wake of tooth loss.

Candidates should be committed to properly maintaining their new partial dentures.

Am I a Candidate for Partial Dentures?

Partial dentures are ideal for patients missing multiple teeth, whether they are right next to one another or are scattered throughout the smile. However, if you are missing only one or two teeth, you may benefit more from a dental implant or bridge. Candidates should also be committed to properly maintaining their new partial dentures. One way to do this is to visit our Fairfax dental clinic twice a year for regular exams and cleanings.

If you are seeking implant-supported dentures, your surgeon will need to establish your candidacy for implant placement. This requires examining jawbone density to ensure that the bone can support implants.

A Look at the Procedure

Treatment begins with a consultation. Your doctor will assess the health of your remaining teeth and possibly take x-rays or an impression of your teeth. Any dental problems, including cavities or gum disease, will need to be addressed before your partial dentures are placed. A trusted laboratory will use the impression of your teeth to fabricate your partial dentures over a two to four-week period. When you come to pick it up, your doctor will check that the restoration fits as comfortably as possible and make any adjustments, as necessary.

Implant-supported dentures require the surgical placement of titanium posts in your jawbone. This treatment can take four to several months to complete.
