When Should My Child First See a Dentist?
/
According to the American Dental Association, you should take your baby to see a dentist after their first tooth comes in or by their first birthday.
Reasons to See a Pediatric Dentist
We understand you might be confused about why you should see a dentist so early, especially if your baby doesn't have any teeth by the time they turn one. But if you're expecting a cleaning like your own dental visits, you need to understand that our pediatric dentists at Fairfax Family Dental can do so much more. During these early appointments, we can help your child:
Meet Our Team & Become Comfortable
Our dentists, Dr. Touraj Kamali, Dr. Milan Simanek, and Dr. Charles D. Kirksey, have created a gentle, caring environment for children that makes our Fairfax pediatric dentist office a pleasant place to visit. We are committed to the well-being of your child's dental health and want to make each child feel safe and relaxed while in our care.
Address Tongue Ties
Sometimes tongue ties produce noticeable problems for a baby, like trouble latching, and the concern can be addressed when they're even just a few days old. In others, your dentist will be the first to notice the issue. Unaddressed tongue ties can compromise a child's speech development, ability to comfortably eat certain foods, and much more.
Start Learning How to Care for Their Smiles
Patient education–especially for the parents of young children–is invaluable. You might know not to put them to bed while they're finishing a bottle of milk or fill their bottles with sugary beverages, but did you know you should clean your little one's gums with a washcloth? And even the smallest babies can benefit from watching their parents practice good oral hygiene. We'll discuss these tips and more during your first pediatric dentistry visit.
Early Intervention Creates Straighter, Healthier Smiles
Our pediatric dental practice in Fairfax, VA, specializes in orthodontics as well. So, not only do we provide your children with clean healthy teeth, we can also offer them a straight smile.
Thanks to advancements in orthodontic procedures, we have the ability in some cases to correct your child's bite without using braces. At as early as six years old, an arch expander can be placed in your child's mouth to help guide the proper movement of teeth during their developmental stage. Braces may still be required in the future, but for a shorter period of time.
Pediatric Dentistry in Fairfax Focuses on Conservative Treatments
Though your first visit might consist of getting to know our team while you hold your baby in your lap in the exam chair, we'll eventually progress to:
- Cleanings to clear built-up plaque
- More thorough exams as they age
- Sealants to protect against cavity formation
- Fluoride to deter harmful bacteria growth
We do everything we can to prevent damage to your children's teeth, but if cavities or other concerns develop we can discuss dental fillings and other restorative treatments as needed.
